Paigey's Heart Foundation was conceived out of our love and our loss of Paige MacKenzie Johnson.  We are a "Not for Profit" tax exempt Foundation.  With your help we can make a difference in other people's lives.  Help us give back to those who need our love and support.  Paige wanted so much to be a teacher and we want to honor her life and her memory by living her dream through Paigey's Heart Foundation.

Our vision of Paigey's Heart Foundation is to raise and donate money in memory of Paige.

Organ Donor Awareness - Trish and I will be taking time to talk at local schools about Paige and organ donation.  We also want to reach out financially and assist families so that they can remain focused on the care of their loved ones while they go through the life-changing event of donation/transplantation.   Access to the current organ transplant/donor system is not available to many because of the high costs involved.  Patients awaiting a transplant organ and surgery can incur an expense of up to $3000 a day whether or not an organ becomes available before they expire.  Recipients of a liver transplant, for example, can expect a hospital bill on the order of $250,000 of which, typically, only $10,000 may go to the surgeon who actually performs the operation.  Post-surgery medications and care can run hundreds or thousands of dollars a month.  PHF will assist with transplant-related expenses such as medication, medical bills and housing and transportation costs for either the donor and transplant receipient.

Our Hero - Paige saved the lives of 4 people by donating her organs.  On December 4th 2005 at 230am Carolina Donor Services let us know that all Paige's organs (the ones we allowed) were successfully transplanted.  This was an important piece of information for Trish and me to know.  The recipient of Paige's right kidney is a fifty-two-year-old female who has been married for twenty years and lives in North Carolina.  She has one adult child and two brothers, and she enjoys traveling.  The recipient of Paige's left kidney and pancreas is a fifty-one-year-old male who is married to a loving and supportive wife and lives in North Carolina.  He has three children and an extensive supportive family, and his appreciation for Paige's gift to him is so great that he becomes tearful when discussing his gratitude.  The recipient of Paige's liver is a twenty-eight-year-old female who lives in Kentucky.  The recipient of Paige's heart and lungs is a seventeen-year-old female who lives in North Carolina.

Be a hero like Paige!  -  One of Paige's legacies was to become an organ donor.  You can honor her memory by also choosing to become a donor.  In Virginia, DC, and Maryland, you can register at a DMV or MVA and get a heart on your driver license or identification card.  To register online in Virginia, go to http://www.save7lives.org/, and in the District go to http://www.donatelifedc.org/.  There will soon be an online registry in Maryland.  Organ and tissue recovery agencies use the registries to determine a person's desire to donate in order to carry out their wishes at the time of their death.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight patients and tissue donor can save or enhance the lives of as many as 50 people who live in chronic pain or debilitation.  In this country more than 70 people are added to the transplant waiting list every day, and at least 18 die every day because there are not enough donated organs to save their lives.  In this country there are people dying every day of alzheimers, diabetes, Lou Gehrig's disease and other fatal illnesses because there are not enough organs donated to help researchers find a cure.  You can help.

You can be a hero like Paige.  Decide to be a donor, register to be a donor, and tell your family you will BE a donor so that they can support your wishes.  To learn more about how donation works, go to http://www.beadonor.org/.

If you sign up to be a donor in memory of Paige, please sign our guestbook and tell us the great news.

Cheer Dynasty Scholarship - We will always be grateful to the Cheer Madness (now "Dynasty") Family (that’s everyone from Coach to Cheerleader to Cheer families).  Paige learned so much more than cheerleading there: she learned to believe in herself and she shared this belief and passion with many young cheerleaders.  We want that spirit to continue.  Our bond with Cheer Dynasty started long ago and we will continue to grow this relationship for years to come.  We have partnered with Cheer Dynasty to help raise money for an already established scholarship fund in Paige's name so that no athlete/cheerleader is left behind.

To make a contribution, please see our "Contribute to PHF" link for more information.
